Dear Xavier,

I would like to tell you a story about an athlete who had a similar experience to yours. The athlete is my brother, so I know the story intimately. He was a nationally ranked decathlete and was competing in a very important track meet, which he was expected to win. After performing brilliantly on the first day of competition, he failed to make the initial height in the pole vault on the second day, eliminating him from the competition. At that point, he threw down his vaulting pole and walked out of the stadium. His young bride soon found him in the grandstands crying his eyes out and vowing to quit competing altogether. After a few days of soul searching, he changed his mind, and thank goodness he did. Several months later he was in Montreal, Canada, in another very important meet, and after two days of competition and performing at personal bests in almost all of the 10 decathlon events, he walked away with a gold medal. You may be too young to know his name since his Olympic victory was in 1976, before you were born, but it is Bruce Jenner.

Sincerely,

Pamela Jenner Mettler

(her husband, Peter, is an FSU graduate)
