Oops ... you're right. I guess I owe her an apology. There was one (relatively) stellar result.

The OZZY press wrote Tatiana off years ago and anyway at this time of year they are only interested in the Football finals!. However some of us are still excited because she is a great talent - nice to see her coming good at last. She could and should have been the first woman to clear 5.00m but unfortunately things didnt work out - but that is life.

You're gonna have to explain Aussie Rules football to all of us some day . . .

Tatiana gets far better coverage in Australia than any US vaulter in the states. There were at least 3 articles about her PR in Daegu, and 10 from Yokohama, most of which had her as the headline.

Anytime anything interesting happens in her personal life it is well covered.

She is probably the biggest pole vault celebrity in the English-speaking world, behind Isinbayeva, as far as amount of coverage given.

And I haven't seen many signs the Aussie press wrote her off. They were usually quite optimistic about her hopes of this and that, even when she was jumping horrible the past few years.

With all due respect - I see a bit more of the Ozzie press than you do - and believe I have a better feel for how she is viewed here. We have a habit of chopping tall poppies down in this country. So while she may get a few lines on an off news day no one expects her to win a major competition - unless her agent tries to stir the pot! The fact that she has a high profile has little to do with her vault performances - which is unfortunate because she could have been as famous as ISI if things had not fallen apart. Remember that she is still only third on our all time list behind Emma George and Kym Howe. The entire vault community here wants that to change and perhaps the process has already begun - I hope so because we do need media interest - but for all the right reasons.

Note that I didnt make any comparisons with the US scene! But as the crafty one always says "Waddever".

Tatiana tops her PB again

THE born-again golden girl of Australian athletics Tatiana Grigorieva has rounded off an impressive 2006 by posting another personal best in the pole vault at a meet in South Korea.


After setting her first personal best in five years with a jump of 4.57 metres at the grand prix meet in Yokohama, Japan at the weekend, Grigorieva went one better yesterday, clearing 4.58m at the Colorful Athletics Meeting in Daegu.

However, it was only good enough for second spot as world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva went on to win comfortably after she cleared 4.70 metres.

Isinbayeva - the first ever female pole vaulter to clear five metres - also denied Grigorieva top spot in Yokohama with a jump of 4.72 metres.

After bursting onto international arena with a captivating silver-medal performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Grigorieva claimed gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games before her career stalled with injuries and an ongoing battle with form.

The Russian-born vaulter re-emerged from the wilderness at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, grabbing a silver medal and setting the scene for a string of impressive performances in the following months.

Russian Vaulter Stars in Taegu

Taegu -- Champion pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia as expected took the gold medal here Thursday with a vault of 4.70 meters at a one-day invitational athletics meeting.

The event in Taegu, the second of its kind following last year's competition, was held to promote the city's chances of hosting the 2011 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Athletics.

The 24-year-old Russian vaulter, who set the world record of 5.01 meters in Helsinki last year and won gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics, started with the height of 4.58 meters and cleared the height in the first attempt.

As soon as Tatiana Gregorieva, who set her personal best of 4.58 meters, failed at 4.63, world record holder tried 4.70 and vaulted it in her second trial. No other competitor was in her league. Isinbayeva missed at 4.80.
