Boyd packs his bags for world titles
04.08.2006
By MITCHELL DALE IT’S tough trying to pole vault over a bar set at 5.05m when there’s an enormous monkey on your back.
Just ask 18-year-old Alexandra Headland pole-vaulter Matt Boyd.
For seven months Boyd was burdened by the pressure of having to jump a second qualifier to make selection for the World Junior Under-20 Championships this month.
It was last December when Boyd recorded the first of two required 5.05m qualifying jumps at the Australian All-Schools national titles.
Still needing a second qualifier to earn selection, Boyd started chasing the 5.05m mark.
Event after event, he tried but failed to jump the height.
He knew he was capable of soaring over the 5.05m mark again, but for some reason it kept going pear-shaped.
And with every miss, the pressure valve tightened a little bit more.
“I tried to chase it after (All-Schools) and it went downhill,â€Â
