Did you still want this translated, even though it's seven months old?

I took five semesters of German back in HS and my first year at UVa. I started with Bs, worked my way down to Ds, transferred to the Engineering School because it had no language requirement back then, and spent the subsequent quarter century firm in the belief that I lacked whatever natural talents are required to learn a foreign language. In the last eighteen months I've reevaluated that position and managed to learn enough Russian to produce some reasonably coherent translations, which I've posted here and elsewhere. I don't have a German/English dictionary at the moment, but I remember a little German syntax and vocabulary, and with babelfish as a fallback, I cranked out the following translation. Caveat emptor!

9.1.2006 | International | Christian Fuchs
Jen Stuczynski - new star in the pole vault sky

The USA has a new pole vault hope who is getting ready to compete with the earlier world record-holder Stacy Dragila or go even further. 23-year-old Jen Stuczynski flew over 4.62 meters this weekend.

In the match at the University of Toronto (Canada) she jumped 27 centimeters higher than in the last indoor season. It is currently the fourth best performance in competition. She is now number two on the all-time US list.

“I am not surprised”, stated the child psychology student self-confidently and referred to the fact that she has already jumped higher in training. “It was only a question of when it would happen in competition.”

Already US Woman’s Indoor Leader

Jen Stuczynski is no longer a completely new face, at least in the US scene, where last year she already won the US indoor title, albeit completely unexpectedly and mediocre height (4.35 m). Nevertheless the 4.62 meters, which is also the best result for a female US vaulter for one and a half years, was somewhat surprising.

Her coach Rick Suhr is inspired by his favorite student, whom he discovered rather coincidentally: “She’s on fire. I’ve never heard of anyone making such progress in one and a half years.” The amazing history of the 1.80 meter tall athlete, who lives in Churchville and momentarily interrupted her study for the sport, is that she began with the pole vault only 18 months ago.

It goes down!

The coach also has an appropriate saying for the present situation ready: “It’s like a rock band, which right away sold its first million-dollar album. It goes down well.”

Jen Stuczynski documents in her own notebook how it goes down. She has made herself a list on which the names of all the athletes who have already jumped higher than she has are specified. With each new best performance she crosses out the colleagues whom she has now overtaken.

Offers coming in

Naturally the success story has not gone unnoticed. Jen Stuczynski, who came over from the multi-events to the pole vault and also played basketball in college, recently got a contract offer on the table from the sports manufacturer Nike. In addition she was invited to the prestigious Millrose Games at the beginning of February in New York.

She could be at the beginning of a big career. Rick Suhr has no doubts about where the way will lead. He states firmly: “I train her and I predict: ‘She will become the USA’s next great women’s pole vaulter.’”

Edit: I happened to notice that the "smart quotes" in my translation had caused it to get truncated during the upgrade to phpBB3, and I also happened to still have the MS Word document where I'd done the original translation, so I figured that I'd restore it.

It was more fun than paying the bills ... which, unfortunately, is what I better get going on next. :(
