Teck Ho thanks Chinese coach after breaking pole vault record
FOUR pole vaulters stole the limelight on the fourth and final day of the Sukma athletics championships at the Darulaman Stadium yesterday.
Sarawak’s Wong Teck Ho, Perak’s Ikshan Shah, Negri Sembilan’s Mohd Aiyuha Sulaiman and Mohd Hafizuddin Sahadan of Pahang all cleared 4.61m to beat the Games record of 4.60m set by Yeap Lai Hin of Perak in 1998.
But Teck Ho was the only one to clear the bar at 4.71m, in his second attempt, to retain the gold medal. On countback, Aiyuha took the silver and Ikshan was awarded the bronze.
The 21-year-old Teck Ho said he would not have broken the record if he had not come under the guidance of Chinese coach Zhang Renzhong for three months.
“I did not train last year because of my STPM examinations. I only started training three months ago and I have to thank my coach for helping me to improve on my technique in such a short period,â€Â
