I wouldn't exactly rule out the possibility of a 20 foot vault. There have been a number of jumps in the past few years, that under the correct standard placement and conditions, a 20 footer is more likely than not. some that stand out:

Markov in Edmonton.

From what I hear, Toby ran out of poles in Modesto and was actually waiting for his tail wind to die as to not blow through his poles. Give him another stick or two and 20 is right there.

Ruslan Yeremenko blew up 5.70 in Europe a few seasons back that would have easily been a 20 footer had the bar been up there.

Tim Mack has had some crazy height on some upper 18 foot vaults in 2004.

Tommy Skipper at Fayetteville. The day he realizes that after clearing 18 6 by about 18 inches you dont have to go up poles to jump higher than that, its there. Scary to think about what happens when he can get in on the poles he has been goin up to though.

Brad Walker is always pushing new heights. When he has his Modesto day, its all over.

I may be goin out on a limb here, but Norberg has had some scary height on some mid 18 foot jumps as well. Give him some time...


I don't think its a matter of if its going to happen. I think its a matter of when.
I do agree that it will be alot different situation than Bubka, where every day out, he could have pumped out a 20 footer. This next time it happens, its going to be a freak day where someone was up a pole higher than usual and the standards were just right. It would be unfair to expect them to do it again the next week, but I do think it will happen sometime soon.

I read the question wrong....I thought it was a 20 footer (as in a 20 foot consistant jumper) .....I think we will see a 20 foot vault, but not a vaulter that is consistantly a 20 foot jumper......sooner or later there may be one, but I don't know if that will happen in my lifetime.

Well it certainly will not be someone who believes success in the vault is 90% dependent on cojones.

Have not seen video of Brad walker and he clearly has something going for him. But all of the other folk you have mentioned plus Hartwig 6.03, Brits 6.03 and Tarasov had/have technical problems which prevented them from jumping higher, The key will be technique because there are lots of guys with the athletic ability and mental toughness along with the desire but no one around at the moment is good enough technically to do it once, far less repeat it day in day out.

But anyway who cares about 20 feet - the rest of the world doesnt know what it means!! In fact as long as anyone cares about jumping 20 feet they are unlikely to do it - they have to join the real world first.

Ok fine... 6.10m... whatever. I'm sure everybody understands that only one man has done it so far. You are right about the technique part. We all could use some work there.

ok, im gonna try this

stats in order starting with the first number:

height cleared, year, height, weight, grip height, ???, meters per second, ...then i get kind of lost... are the next numbers something with age and height progression? that is a weird post.

but 20 foot vault? that would be interesting to see. but we saw a 19'10" vault as recently as 2001. isnt when we will see a new World record a far more interesting question.
