Okkert Brits, the South African pole vault champion and record holder, recorded his best height of 2005 at a special pole vault contest over the weekend when he cleared an excellent 5.65 metres.

It was his first competition since winning the national title in Durban in April with a modest 5.20 metres.
The 32-year-old Stellenbosch-based star is determined to retain his Commonwealth Games title in Melbourne in March.
His victory in Cape Town placed him in fourth place on the 2005 Commonwealth best performance list behind three Australian athletes. Francois Coetzer and Brent Howell, the South African junior champion finished second and third with jumps of 4.90 metres and 4.70 metres.
National champion Lindie Roux of Boland won the women's event with a personal best of 5.05 metres.

In the men’s pole vault Okkert Brits, who is determined to retain his title at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in March, will have his friend and rival for many years, Tim Lobinger, of Germany as main opponent.

Brits has been in very good shape since the beginning of last month and will be out to post a good height.

His best so far this season is 5.65m.

Lobinger’s best in 2005 was 5.93m. Other SA champions that will be taking part are Janice Josephs (100m Hurdles) â€â€
