Pole Vault provides Chinese duel too

Expect a lot of thrills too in the women's Pole Vault even if the competition mainly involves the Chinese. Shuying Gao, who recently won the Asian Championships with a 4.53 Asian record clearance after her fifth- place finish at the World Championships, will start as the favourite. This is despite the fact that she lost to 19-year-old Zhao Yingying at the Chinese National Games. With Zhao also present in Macau, the question is: Will Gao come back hungrier than ever now that she has tasted her first defeat in a while at the Asian level? Or will Zhao be more motivated than ever to break the Asian junior record (4.50m) which she equalled in Nanjing - and beat Gao again, this time in Macau?

Zhao Yingying pulled off an upset in the women's pole vault as the 19-year-old Chinese dethroned her compatriot and defending champion Gao Shuying.

Zhao cleared the height of 4.40m to win the gold, while Gao missed three attempts at the height and had to settle for the silver with 4.30.

Zhao then tried to clear the height of 4.54m in a bid to break the Asian record of 4.53m held by Gao, but failed in three attempts.

Japanese Takuro Mori won the weirdest pole vault in the world as he cleared 5.00 meters with the other two competitors scoring no mark, which means no medal for them.

Mori, whose personal best is 5.30 meters, flew over the 5-meterbar in his first attempt and failed three times at 5.20.

Zhang Hongwei of China and Satoru Yasuda of Japan, who both have a better record than Mori, skipped the 5m mark and faced up to 5.20.

Both failed, and thus no medal.

Japan won gold in an unusual pole vault final that ended with only one athlete on the podium. Mori Takuro -- who won at 5 meters -- was the only athlete to clear the bar. His rivals -- Japan's Yasuda Satoru and China's Zhang Hongwei -- recorded no mark and weren't awarded medals.
