The meet was rather uneventful, with these results:

Jason Wurster NH'd at 5.05. Canada's best vaulter prior to Shawn Barber, Jason's indoor PR is 5.60 (2013) and his outdoor PR is 5.51 (2012).

It was highly unusual of Shawn to start at only 5.05, and also to go up only 10 cm at a time. Can anyone that was there say what the conditions were, or why he only cleared 5.60?

Good luck to Shawn in his upcoming international competitions!

I'm sure he is focusing on getting ready for Worlds right now...

Yes, but first he's out to beat the Americans (including Sam Kendricks) in the Pan Am Games, which Toronto Canada is hosting on July 10-26. The Men's PV final is July 21st. Qualifications for World's in Bejing are on Aug 22nd.

Here's a link from the Toronto Star, which explains a few of the things I was wondering about re his win in Edmonton. There were apparently bad wind conditions there, so he was happy with his 5.60 on short poles.

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/panamgames/2015/07/05/shawn-barber-remains-king-of-pole-vault-in-canada.html

It also mentioned that his father/coach cleared 3.80 ...

... George Barber, who figured since he was here he might as well jump, cleared 3.80m and was eliminated at 4.00.

Sam isn't on our roster for Pan Ams, it's Jake Blankenship and Mark Hollis.

That's disappointing.

Recently, the USA hasn't fared very well at these games ...

In 2003, the USA went 1-2 ...
1 United States Toby Stevenson (USA) 5.40-O 5.50-XXX 5.50-X 5.45-X 5.40-O 5.45-O 5.45 m
2 United States Russ Buller (USA) 5.40-O 5.50-XXX 5.50-X 5.45-X 5.40-O 5.45-X 5.40 m
3 Saint Lucia Dominic Johnson (LCA) 5.20-O 5.35-XO 5.40-XXO 5.50-XXX 5.40 m

But then in 2007,
1st Fábio Gomes da Silva Brazil – – xo o xxo 5.40
2nd Giovanni Lanaro Mexico – – xo xxo xxx 5.30
3rd Germán Chiaraviglio Argentina – o o xx– x 5.20

And in 2011,
1st Lázaro Borges Cuba – – – – o o o – o xxo o 5.80 PR
2nd Jeremy Scott United States – – – o xo xo o – xxx 5.60
3rd Giovanni Lanaro Mexico – – – o o o xxx 5.50

This year, with Kendricks out and Shawn Barber (Canada) and Thiego Braz (Brazil) in, the Americans will be lucky to get a bronze medal.

It's not a meet our country places a big emphasis on. They're not even funding a full team, poor race walkers.
