Passing this on...

The 40th Annual Knights of Columbus Games is fast approaching, Feb 5-6, 2005. We are in the process of selecting our invitational sections of the meet. We look for athletes who have represented their country at major international events. To get an idea of the caliber of our meet, here is a link to last year's results...

The meet is held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, on a flat 200m track.
The events we plan on offering this year are:

Men: 50, 60, 200, 400, 60H, WT
Women: 50, 60, 200, 400, 60H, PV

We like to keep some lanes open for Canadian, Prairie, and local athletes, but do have a mandate to make every field international. Please note, however, this is not a developmental meet.
If you are interested in being considered, please send me an email. If you know of anyone who may be interested in this information, feel free to pass it along.

Thanks,
Scott

K of C Games get condensed

Dave Deibert, The StarPhoenix
Published: Monday, January 16, 2006
Organizers of the 2006 Knights of Columbus Indoor Games are hoping that bigger doesn't necessarily mean better.
The 41st version of the lone invitational track and field meet remaining in Canada is getting a makeover. Instead of running the traditional three days, the event will be compressed into two days, Feb. 3-4.
The reasons are twofold, says meet director Scott St. Pierre.
The first is monetary. Organizers will save a great deal of cash by cutting a day off the weekend schedule.
"It's more financially responsible," says St. Pierre.
The second reason, he says, is getting back to focusing on the mandate of the event: That is, more mixing of the elementary and invitational athletes together.
The way the schedule has gone in recent years, most of the invitational athletes were competing on Sunday -- except for a handful of Saturday night events -- while the elementary-school competitors were all finished by Saturday.
"They haven't really been crossing," says St. Pierre. "We want that interaction."
The plan is to run most of the invitational events from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, excluding the 50-metre sprints and 200m heats which will run Friday night. Men's weight throw has been removed from the slate. St. Pierre is disappointed with that change, but calls it necessary.
That leaves the meet light on field events -- women's pole vault is all that remains -- but St. Pierre is pleased with how the meet is coming together.
Familiar faces such as Canadian sprinter Nicolas Macrozonaris and three-time NCAA champion Leo Bookman are expected to compete, along with top hurdler Karl Jennings. On the women's side, Savatheda Fynes -- one of the top sprinters all-time in the 50- and 60-metre distances -- returns to the Bridge City.
Of the local athletes, pole vaulter Kelsie Hendry is favoured to win another K of C title, while Adrianne Vangool will be in the medal hunt in vault. On the track, Nicole Buchholz and Karlyn Serby compete in the 50- and 60-metre sprints.

A vantage point very important at K of C Games

Dave Deibert, The StarPhoenix
Published: Tuesday, January 24, 2006

A seat near the finish line has traditionally been the hot location for spectators during the invitational portion of the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games. This year, says meet director Scott St. Pierre, fans might want to position themselves near the starting blocks.

The reason: It would give them the perfect vantage point to watch a highlight event off the track.

While the men's 50- and 60-metre sprints remain the showcase events at the K of C Games, women's pole vault has raised its profile to the point where this year it's one of the main attractions. The pole vault field for the 41st annual Games, which run Feb. 3-4 at the Saskatoon Field House, is perhaps the best in the history of the event.

"It'll be exciting," said St. Pierre.

The favourite -- both on the runway and in the eyes of fans -- is local star Kelsie Hendry. The three-time defending K of C champion and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) gold medallist from 2003-05 with the University of Saskatchewan is currently the top-ranked vaulter in Canada and preparing to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, from March 15-26.

Another K of C title won't come easy, though. Kate Soma, the 2005 NCAA champ from the University of Washington, has a personal best of 4.36 metres, not far off Hendry's top vault of 4.46; while Canadian Stephanie McCann has to her credit bronze medals from the 2002 Commonwealth Games, 2003 Pan-American Games and a 10th-place finish at the 2004 Summer Olympics.

"Those two are going to challenge (Hendry)," said St. Pierre.

Others to watch include U of S stars Adrianne Vangool, the top-ranked vaulter in CIS, and Leah Vause, a Huskie rookie ranked behind only Vangool; Ebbie Metzinger, the 2005 K of C bronze medallist; Sue Kupper, the 2005 CIS bronze medallist behind Hendry and Vangool; and Brynn Anderson, the 2005 Canada Summer Games champion.

"Probably the best competition Kelsie will get before Commonwealth Games is right here," said St. Pierre

Indoor Games Ready to Vault Ahead

Written by Evan Wright - 600 Action News-Local First
Tuesday, 16 January 2007
All eyes may be on the pole vaulting event as high profile athletes compete at the 2007 Knights of Columbus Indoor Games.
3-time defending champ Kelsie Hendry will be returning for the February 2nd and 3rd games. However, the 2007 Jack Wells Testimonial Athlete of the Year may be in some tough competition.
Hendry is up against April Steiner, who is ranked 7th in U-S pole vaulting. She also claimed $50,000 on NBC's Fear Factor.
Stephanie McCann, a Commonwealth Games bronze medialist, will also compete in the pole vault.
The games will be held at the Saskatoon Field House. High school and elementary students will also be taking part in a variety of events.

April never committed to going to this meet, and was a bit surprised to hear her name dropped in a press release.
