Interesting fact about bubka, apparently his older brother was a vaulter also.

" Sergey needed all three attempts to clear his opening height of 5.70m, but then he cleared 5.85m on his first attempt to win the gold medal from his elder brother Vasily who finished second"
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

bubka's older brother must be hidden from the spotlight cause there seems to be not much about him online.

his brother was really good...5.86 (19-2 3/4) back in 88. He has the honor of being the first to jump 19' and not win (lost to Sergei obviously).

I remember the story of Vasily breaking a pole and missing the pit entirely...landed flat on his back on the runway/box area. Got up, went to the end of runway and immediately cleared 18'8 1/4". Now that's hardcore.

No kidding, I would have to take a twenty minute break after that! At Least.
