Police swoop on Italian pole vault world champion

ROME: World pole vault champion Guiseppe Gibilisco and Sydney Olympic hammer silver medallist Nicola Vizzoni were raided by Italian narcotics officers on Wednesday.

Police said no banned substances were found in the athletes’ homes. Gibilisco was the first Italian to win a pole vault medal at the World Championships or Olympic Games when he triumphed in Paris last August. More than 100 homes, offices and hotel rooms were searched in the latest raids by police acting on 138 search orders issued by Rome magistrates investigating the illegal use and distribution of drugs in sport which is a criminal offence in Italy.

Fraud squad detectives raided teams in the Giro d’Italia cycling race on Tuesday night and seized medical files. But they admitted no illegal substances were found. The Giro has been bedevilled by doping scandals in the last five years. afp
