Prisoner on run after pole-vaulting perimeter wall
A prisoner in Chile is on the run after pole-vaulting the jail's four-metre-high perimeter wall with a washing-line pole.
Investigators found a picture of Ukrainian pole-vault champion Sergei Bubka on his cell wall in Coronel jail.
The fugitive, Luis Fernando Mena, is the chief suspect in a supermarket hold-up during which the shop's owner was shot dead. He was being held on murder and robbery charges.
The 19-year-old made the vault just before dinner when there were no other prisoners in the exercise yard. Guards say they couldn't believe their eyes.
La Cuarta newspaper says Mena had disappeared before they reacted.
The regional prison authorities have begun an internal inquiry into how Mena came to have access to the pole.
