Ecker ready for comeback vault
Friday 23 January 2004

Dessau, Germany - Danny Ecker one of just six pole vaulters ever to have cleared 6 metres indoors, will make his long-awaited comeback this Sunday (25 Jan) in Dessau after 18 months of injury torment.

The 26-year-old who set the German indoor record in Dortmund in 2001 with a 6.00m clearance, has suffered tendon trouble in recent years which has prevented any competition since a 5.55 vault on the 19 July 2002 in Monaco.

His immediate aim is the Dessau meet (where he cleared 5.82m in 2002) followed by a meeting in Dortmund on 4 February, via which he will be able to gauge his progress against a strong field.

"You can't put expectations too high for the first event of the season, but I'm just happy to be vaulting again at all,'' he said.

Ecker took the bronze in the 1999 World Indoor Championships, finished fourth at the outdoor World Championships in Seville that summer, and reached the Olympic final in Sydney the following year, finishing eighth.
"You have some interesting coaching theories that seem to have little potential."
