Brandenburg Gate: Miles wins pole Goto
So 07 Sep, 19:08

Berlin (AP) American pole vault champion, Derek Miles was the winner of the
pole vault extraordinary meeting before Berlin's most famous landmark,
Brandeburg Gate. The Beijing finalist cleared a personal best by three centimeters
today of 5.85 (19ft. 2 1/4) to kickoff 2009 World Athletic Championships ticket
sales campaign. 5000 spectators were on hand. Uzbekistan's, Leonid Andreev was
second with the same mark as Jeff Hartwig (USA) with fewer misses.

Best German was Lars Börgeling (Leverkusen) in 5,40 in fourth place. This
even served as an advertisement for the 2009 in Berlin held Athletics World
Championships. Association president Clemens Prokop announced that more than
150,000 tickets for the World Championships at the Olympic Stadium have been sold.

World Masters Record?

Note that Hartwig's 5.85m is an age-40 best (by 35 centimeters over the present masters record). Since the Brandenburg Gate competition was a "street vault," I wonder whether they'll give Jeff credit for the record? I very much hope so!

Oops! I read Becca's post to mean that Andreev and Hartwig shared Miles' winning height and the places of all three depended on misses. I can see that wasn't what was intended, but haven't been able to find a height for the 2nd and 3rd place tie. I still hope that Hartwig's vault might be an age-40 best, but as for the master's record, he has vaulted better than Jessee's 5.50 in seven other outdoor competitions since turning 40 on 25 September 2007.

Andreev 5.55
Hartwig 5.55 Age 40
Borgeling 5.40
