Four times New Zealand pole vault champion Darcy McGonagle of Whangarei has died.
The 69 year old passed away on Friday after a short illness from cancer.
McGonagle was national champion in 1966, 71, 72 and 1973.
He represented New Zealand at the 1962 Perth Empire and Commonwealth Games, finishing seventh in the pole vault.
McGonagle, a builder by trade, was the current president of Athletics Northland and was president of the Marist sports complex in Whangarei.
He remained passionate about pole vaulting, coaching and as an official officiated on the pole vault at New Zealand championships. The last championships McGonagle attended was in Christchurch in January 2006.
His funeral will be in Whangarei on Tuesday.
