Isinbayeva heads for the heights again at Madrid Super Grand Prix - PREVIEW
Friday 15 July 2005
Madrid, Spain – Olympic Pole Vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia, the IAAF Overall World Ranked number one athlete, should be the brightest jewel star in the ‘Meeting de Atletismo Madrid 2005’, the fifth leg of the IAAF Super Grand Prix Series which will take place tomorrow (16 July), where no less than six Olympic champions will gather in the Spanish capital.
Can Isinbayeva do it again?
It has almost become the norm that Isinbayeva, the Pole Vault World champion and World record holder, improves on her own previous World record whenever she competes. Indeed, the major news in Rethimno last Sunday was that last year’s Athlete of the Year did not manage the feat. The 23-year-old kicked-off her 2005 outdoor season with a 4.93 World record at the IAAF Super Grand Prix in Lausanne on 5 July, and now returns to Madrid where she achieved the highest ever indoor clearance (4.92) during the European Indoor Championships last March.
In Madrid, Isinbayeva has a sizeable 33cm margin over the closest contender, America’s Tracy O’Hara, runner-up to Stacy Dragila at the U.S. Trials in Carson. Her compatriot Jillian Schwartz, Pavla Hamackova of the Czech Republic, Germany’s Carolin Hingst and Iceland’s Thorey Elisdottir have all bettered 4.50 or higher this season.
