Performance in practice progressively worsening

This is really more of a coaching question but I was wondering if any coach has experienced the following. I have certain athletes who begin a practice off very well. They will begin the practice on a pole that is above their weight and begin blowing through it and looks as though they are ready to move on to a bigger or stiffer pole but then they begin having trouble just taking off. And it is not an issue of the athlete being fatigued. This may be their fourth or fifth jump in the session from a third or fourth left approach. I make a concerted effort to have one focus for the practice and not overwelm the athlete or athletes with too much information. What could I possoply be doing to prevent this type of situation or what may I be doing incorrectly?
