Training without running

Last year, every time I pulled my kids off the runway and put them on the track, to work on speed, someone got hurt. First shin splints then sore groin and again a sore groin. By mid-season they were just jumping. (4 days a week) no track work at all. It was both my vaulters first season to vault and they both made it to the state meet. Since we had success with this training method last year, we may continue it this year. What are your thoughts? By the way, our track is concrete and I think it was the cause of some of the injuries.

Find some grass to run on.

Run on grass and ease into the workouts. Everytime i try to jump into a running workout i want to run 95-100%. Thats when you get injured. Start out with some easy, 2 a week running workouts no more than 70%, and have everyone ice whatever hurts after running. Ive kinda learned the hard way that injuries come from pushing too much before you are ready, so ease into it and you should be fine.

make then do sprint drills each practice after stretching which includes 30m of walking on their balls and heels of their feet with their feet in a duck walk and pigeon toe. That'll strength the area in their legs where shin splints happen. Not an overnight process.

easing into the running is a must, as said hear by experience, and the strengthening drills helps a bunch too for shin splints!

2 days a week I would have them workout with the sprinters. Some days after vaulting I would have them run 40's with their poles.
