"girls-only" vs "boys-only" vs "co-ed" coaching

Unread postby Erica » Sat Sep 12, 2009 12:26 pm

Bartolina Athletics is hosting a camp for "girls only" because I have seen the excitement and freedom some girls experience when there are no boys at pole vault practice. They seem to lose some of their inhibitions and gain focus, making their vaulting much better. I want to give all female vaulters the opportunity to experience this by hosting some "girls only" weekend camps.

From your experiences as a coach with your female vaulters, how do you think they will respond to a camp without boys? This stuff was touched on briefly in the "15 yr old girl w/ potential" topic. On the other hand, we are planning some "boys only" weekends as well. What ratio of "boys only" vs. "girls only" vs. "co-ed" camps do you think would your kids would be most interested in?

Thanks for your imput!

Erica,
I do same sex only practices and I think the same sex clinics would be good too if the numbers are high enough to warrent it.

I think this sounds like a good experiment! I'm not brave enough to try it, but I'm curious to see what kind of turn out you get. Good luck Erica!

Good idea! I could see it very beneficial with the boys and girls being less distracted and more focused on vaulting and less on the opposite sex. Let us know how it goes.
