New Englands PV Postponed to Monday 6-11

Unread postby Russ » Sat Jun 09, 2007 2:33 pm

The Pole Vault was postponed today at the New England Championships due to severe thunderstorms and heavy rain.

The rest of the meet was going on when I left; they were planning to keep going with the other events. They rescheduled the Girls & Boys pole vault for Monday afternoon at 2 pm.

The conditions did not bode well for David Slovenski.

Slovenski, a Brunswick pole vaulter, woke up Saturday feeling a bit amiss, and the bad weather didn't help his cause as he prepared for the New Englands in Fitchburg, Mass.

On the way to the meet, he received a call while in Lowell, Mass., informing him that the pole vault was postponed until Monday. Slovenski turned around and returned to Brunswick.

On Monday, he was back in Massachusetts with great results.

Slovenski was part of a Maine sweep in the regional pole vault competition: Slovenski won the boys' title by clearing 15 feet and Bethany Dumas of Cony won the girls' title, setting a meet record of 11-7.

"That was sort of refreshing," Slovenski said of Saturday's postponement. "I wasn't feeling good Saturday but I got two more days of rest. I had gone to school the week before and I got a good weekend of rest."

Slovenski entered the regional championship as the fourth seed in the field of 37, based on his Class A championship height of 14-4.

"Everything went well," Slovenski said of Monday's competition.

Slovenski plans to compete in the Nike outdoor nationals this weekend in Greensboro, N.C., and will spend the summer continuing his training.

He'll also begin the NCAA recruiting process, and is considering Princeton, Stanford and Harvard.

Slovenski and Dumas' performances led the Maine contingent at the meet.
