First CT High School Girl over 11'0" Indoors

Unread postby Russ » Wed Dec 13, 2006 12:40 am

Jessica Sullivan of the Norwich Free Academy became the first Connecticut High School Girl ever to pole vault 11'0" indoors tonight at the Wesleyan Developmental Meet in Middletown, CT. Sullivan, a senior, who decided to forego competing in gymnastics this season to pole vault instead, cleared 11'0" on her final attempt. She just brushed the bar on her way over, but it stayed steady with only a slight wobble on the pegs. She received a well-deserved round of applause from the appreciative crowd. Sullivan then had the bar raised and took three good attempts at 11'3". Daniella Ponte, of Torrington, held the previous highest mark by a Connecticut High School girl at 10'6".

Jessica's jump at the Wesleyan meet didn't actually "count" as a state record because the meet was a "developmental" meet.

But she did jump 10'06.25 last night at the Jack Long ECC Coaches Invitational in New Haven, CT to set an official state girls indoor record. She had plenty of height over 11'0 on her last 2 attempts, but hit the bar on the way down.

Sullivan Raises Bar Again
Glastonbury Boys, Weaver Girls Win
January 7, 2007
By REID L. WALMARK, Courant Staff Writer

MIDDLETOWN -- Jessica Sullivan set the state girls indoor pole vault record for the second time in 15 days at the 64th Hartford Public Indoor Track Invitational Saturday at Wesleyan University.

Sullivan, a Norwich Free Academy senior, cleared 10 feet, 9 inches, a 21/2-inch improvement over her vault Dec. 22 at the Jack Long Invitational.

Sullivan, named the girls' Best in Field, cleared 11 feet in an unofficial meet Dec. 12.

"It would have been nice to make 11-1," said Sullivan, who failed at that height three times. "My attempts at 11-1 were not that far off. I'll look forward to 11 again soon. Hopefully, I'll get it in the next couple of meets."

NFA assistant coach Russ VerSteeg said Sullivan can go higher. "She decided to go for the record after she was the only one left in the competition. I should have told her to switch to the other pole."

The outdoor record is 11-1/4, set by Fitch's Jessica Daigneault at last year's State Open. Daigneault, Windham's Jordan Ritchie and East Lyme's Lauren Bennett tied for second Saturday at 9-6. The meet record was 9-2.

Now it's "OFFICIAL"! Jessica Sullivan won the SCC Coaches Invitational today in new Haven, CT with a vault of 11-0. She had jumped 11-0 in an "unofficial", developmental meet on December 12. 2006, but this time the vault was in a regulation meet, and measured with a steel tape.

It was a new CT Girls Indoor record. She cleared on her third attempt just touching the bar as she went over.

She's also sent in her deposit to attend Notre Dame in the fall. She'll be joining Mary Saxer and Kate Matoon on the Fighting Irish pv squad.

Congratulations Jessica!

January 28, 2007
Staff Report

NEW HAVEN -- Jessica Sullivan of Norwich Free Academy broke the girls state pole vault record for the third time this season with a vault of 11 feet at the SCC Coaches Invitational meet at the New Haven Athletic Center.

Sullivan took her first attempt Saturday at 10-0 and cleared it. She also cleared 10-6 on her first attempt. She missed on her first two attempts at 11-0, just grazing the bar with her left arm on the first try. After switching to a stiffer pole, she set the record on her third attempt.
