North Carroll junior takes Maryland’s top pole vault mark into county meet

HAMPSTEAD -- In Jess Huber’s mind, she’s still a pole vaulter that struggles to clear 9 feet 6 inches.

In reality, the North Carroll junior is way past that.

Huber takes her personal record of 10-06 into today’s county track and field meet, where she’s the likely favorite to win a gold medal. The height is also a school record, and as of Monday it was the top mark in the state, according to information compiled by mdrunning.net.

Huber started the year with a goal of reaching 11 feet, and she went through the indoor track season racking up gold medals â€â€

i'm not at all downing the accomplishments of these vaulters, i competed against them all 4 years of high school. but at the same time i do not understand the politics of the mpssaa and the press in MD. I've lived here all my life..in a small town, went to a small school, one of the smallest in the state (700 students) which makes it 1A and i don't get why these smaller schools and their athletes never really seem to get recognition. you hear about these people and then you're like well i can do that too, the all metro/ all county teams seem to be a little swayed.

North Carroll senior wins girls pole vault championship for third straight year

LANDOVER - Jess Huber spent much of the pole vault competition relaxing on the long bench adjacent to the runway. The North Carroll senior sat in her sweat suit, laughing and giggling while chatting with other girls during the Class 4A state championship meet.

She remained relaxed when her chance finally came. Huber had little trouble winning her third consecutive state championship last night at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

"I vault better when I'm relaxed," Huber said. "I just feel when I'm kind of sitting there doing nothing, I get kind of tense."

Huber's relaxation strategy worked nicely in this meet. She cleared 10 feet to win the title, beating South River's Jen Whitfield (9-6). Haley Paskalides of South River and Holly Bowen from Chesapeake-AA tied with Wootton's Liz Calhoun for third place with vaults of 9 feet.

Huber cleared 10-9 earlier this winter in a meet at Hagerstown and wanted to get a shot at 11 feet in this event. However, she missed on all three attempts at 10-6.

Perry Hall's Shawn Myers was the only other local athlete to win an event, capturing the boys pole vault (14-0).

LANDOVER — Jess Huber stood on the mat, raised her arms and celebrated her third consecutive state pole vault championship, but she saved her best pose for after everyone had left the area.

Already having cleared 10 feet and a Class 4A state record Tuesday, Huber posed for a photo by climbing the medal stand and standing on the first-place perch. Then she flexed her biceps above her shoulders while her father snapped a picture.

Nobody could keep up with Huber, the North Carroll senior who capped her indoor season by winning county, conference, region and state titles. She cleared her first attempt at 10 feet Tuesday, and when South River’s Jen Whitfield failed to match it Huber asked for the bar to be set at 10-6.

Huber wanted to reach 11 feet — Urbana’s Lauren Graff set the all-classification meet record in 2002 at 11-9 — but coming up a little short was “no big deal,â€

The Panthers senior continued her dominance in the pole vault, capturing her third straight indoor state championship to go with the state title she captured in the outdoor season last spring. On Feb. 19, Huber cleared 10 feet to win the Class 4A state championship at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex. A first-team All-Metro selection in the indoor and outdoor seasons last year, Huber defeated South River's Jen Whitfield, who finished second after clearing 9-6. Huber, who plans to continue pole vaulting in college, hasn't decided which school she will attend. Her best effort this season was 10-9 at a meet in Hagerstown.
