2016 Pole Vault Summit

He jumped 5.30, 5.45, 5.65, 5.77, 5.83 on first attempts, 5.94 PR and NR on third attempt, then 6.00m on first attempt and then stopped after that.

Wow!!

He didn't look like he could jump any higher today, but that is a pretty impressive start to the season!! Can't wait for World Indoors : D

Yamamoto from Japan iNR and World Indoor Qualifier

On the women's side, Saxer, Morris and Stefanidi all jumped 4.71, a PR and World Indoor Qualifier for Saxer (the other two were already qualified).

From http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/trackandfield/shawn-barber-pole-vault-canadian-record-reno-1.3407140 ...

Shawn Barber becomes the 16th and youngest man to join the six-metre club, the ninth man to clear that barrier indoors, and the first to do it since 2008.

This is incorrect, of course. Shawn is the NINETEENTH vaulter in the club, and the TENTH to clear it indoors.

And he's not the YOUNGEST either. More on that soon.

In chronological order, the club members are:

Looks like this page http://www.polevaultpower.com/6mclub.php needs an update. :D

Edit: I added a column that indicates whether the vaulter first joined the club indoors or outdoors.

Sergei Bubka, Shawn Barber, and Okkert Brits are the only 3 vaulters to have cleared 6.00m when just 21 years old.

Sergei first cleared it 7 months and 16 days after his 21st birthday, and Shawn cleared it 7 months and 28 days after his 21st birthday. So by age, Shawn was just 12 days older than Sergei Bubka when he joined the 6.00m club!

And Okkert Brits was 3 months and 18 days older than Shawn when he joined the club.

Oldest was Bjorn Otto at almost 35 years old when he joined.

Due to rounding errors, I may be off by a day or two on some of the ages.

You may have noticed that in my 2nd last post above, I reported that Barber was 11 days older than Bubka when they joined the 6m club, and then in my last post I said he was 12 days older. How can that be?

First of all, all you really need to know is that Shawn was roughly a week-and-a-half older than Bubka when they joined (or even that they were almost exactly the same age). So if you don't care about getting it more precise than that, you can stop reading now..

But for the statistically insane (I plead mea culpa, I suppose), this discrepancy is because I used the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet app for part of the calculations, and I used rough approximations of 365 days in a year, and 30 days in a month for another part of the calculations.

But I did note at the bottom of the post that I may be out by a day or two, due to "rounding errors".

It bothered me that I didn't pin it down to an exact number of days. So I changed my approximations to 365.25 and 30.4375.

These are still approximations, because Barber was born 9 years after Bubka first cleared 6m, so an even more precise answer depends on how many leap years fell during their respective 21 years each. I'm not quite insane enough to account for THAT! :)

365.25 and 30.4375 are close enough, I think, to compute their respective ages to the exact number of days.

To prove this (to myself), I also computed the difference using "+ Weeks + Days" instead of "+ Months + Days".

So it turns out that with the more accurate approximations - whether you compute Years+Days or Years+Months+Days or Years+Weeks+Days, the results are all the same: Barber was ELEVEN days older than Bubka when he joined the 6m club!

So there you have it.

Now, if you considered the TIME of day when was each born; and the TIME of day when each cleared 6m for the first time, then ... :D

I editted the chart in my first post on Saturday, but could not re-post it due to a "quota exceeded" error from phpBB.

I may try to re-post it another time, when the quota problem is fixed. Meanwhile, here's a text-only version of it (not nearly as pretty) ...

I find it interesting that from 95-99 7 people achieved this feet and from 04-09 7 people also achieved this feet. So two relatively narrow bands of time roughly 10 years apart that produced similar results. Yet the entirety of the rest of time, only 5 people have done it.
