Stevenson soars at Modesto
2004 U.S. Indoor pole vault champion Toby Stevenson bettered his previous career best performance three times and set a new meet record Saturday in defeating a strong field at the 2004 Coca-Cola Modesto Relays.
Stevenson’s clearance of 6.00 meters/19 feet, 8.25 inches made him the second American ever to clear that height, and it is the best mark in the world this year. The only other American ever to clear 6 meters, U.S. record holder Jeff Hartwig, was the runner-up on Saturday with a clearance of 5.75m/18-10.25.
Stevenson’s previous personal best was an indoor clearance earlier this year of 5.81m/19-0.75. Prior to his winning jump on Saturday, Stevenson cleared 5.85m/19-2.50 and 5.90m/19-4.75. Stevenson’s performance is the best in the world since Dmitriy Markov won the 2001 World Outdoor Championships in Edmonton with a clearance of 6.05m/19-10.25.
