Off the top of my head, I think every vaulter that has cleared 6m more than once had a PR higher than 5.80 at age 23 except for Hartwig (most were probably 5.90+ at 23). Old guys jumping 6m is pretty rare. Most have been 23-27 when they first cleared 6m. I don't know if we have the system in place any longer to support vaulters to peak in those prime years.

On a side note if your logic is true Andrew Irwin would have a better chance. 5.72 as a freshman in college. I really wish he would have taken shots at the World Juniors. He may have had 5.80 before he was done being a Junior. My assumption is the Olympic Trials were too big of a draw for him and his coach.

Considering how few guys had A standard, you can't blame them for choosing the Trials. If it had been like years past where everyone had it, maybe a different story...

I am glad you put Jack in the mix... The development Jack and his coaches have accomplished in college is phenomenal. Jack's technical model development from his Sr. year in HS (5.49m 18') to now (5.72m 18'09.25 indoor and 5.65m 18'6" outdoor from an 8L training run) is immense and shows greater promise than the increases in height indicate. All of the foundational bricks are there and I believe he has not only the athletic ability to do very well, but the environment and the intangibles to support him in his post collegiate pursuits. I wish him all the best.

I hesitated to comment on this post initially out of respect for the athletes and the insurmountable commitment level that is required to continue to train at an elite level: monetary, social, physical, etc... I believe there are several other post collegiate elite vaulters with the ability: I hope they are able to continue to train and compete as they desire.

While I do not personally know Jeff, I understand that this was one of his exceptional qualities... perseverance!!! Among other variables and intangibles, Jeff Hartwig did well because he was determined too...

where does Tim Mack fit into the "numbers"

in 1995 he was fresh from college, 5.60 ? in 2004 he was 32..

do you (any reader) have his progess to 6 meters and the gold medal?

my point being this (and taking nothing from Tim.. only giving him highest kudos's for his success) in nine years from college he became a Gold medalist..

anyone with his physical attributes should be capable of doing the same... a very good model.. so to speak..

I am very glad that you have made this point and I believe that this fact is an even greater indicator of the commitment levels required to attain the elusive 6m bar.

Persevere...

good morning,

It takes, on average, seven years for an athlete to become world class...

Tim was ready in 2000 but didn't have the same "numbers" on the runway.

anyone ready to committ to a "list" for men?

and let's look at the women...

rainbow you have the stats fro jenn? year by year..

Jenn Suhr, but I don't know that she's a good one to compare too.

2004 Not on the list but I think she jumped about 3.70 or so.
2005 4.26/4.35i (according to Tilastopaja, but I'm pretty sure they missed a bunch of meets for her that year. I think she went 4.60 in a very low key meet that summer).
2006 4.66/4.68i
2007 4.88
2008 4.92
2009 4.81/4.83i
2010 4.89
2011 4.91
2012 4.83/4.88i
