The World Indoor Bronze Medalist, Denys Yurchenko is only about 5'8". His PR is 5.81. He's got a studly jump and probably carries crazy speed on the runway. You can see a lot of his jumps on stabhochsprung.com. There have been a couple real short, good americans, but I'm young and don't know much about them. Maybe one of them grey haired folk on this board can tell you something.

The Sovereign LORD is my strength;

The guy that won the 2002 world chamionships in the HJ was only like 5'7. He also jumped like 7"8. That is just rediculous.

Vaultn Chris

Unread postby crumpman » Thu Mar 11, 2004 11:31 am

Chris was 5' 2" when he went 12' in 10th grade. I think he was 5'4" when he went 13' and not much more when he went 15' 7". He is 5' 6" now at 17' 1", am I right Chris? If you have never seen a "Not good at being tall" vaulter jump the heights Chris does, it is a real treat. Makes the jump look even bigger.

Shorter vaulters are usually faster and more techincally sound, because they have to be to make up for grip and height.

Taller guys are usually slower with not so good technique that can just hold high!!!

Example:

Duplantis=Chistokov
Averbuk=Miles
the list goes on and on!!

If someone would like to imply that Derrick Miles is slow, i'd like to dispute that. I've seen Derrick in some workouts and they don't call him Big Rig for nothing. That guy sounds like a Mac truck when he rolls by. Maybe Jeremy Scott would be a better example. At 6'9", he doesn't have to run quite as fast as Dup or Dial to jump as high as they did.
The greatest gift I ever received was the look on a young vaulters' face after setting a PR!
