WIC Update : M Q round results, Today's Inet broadcast

Unread postby VaultnGus » Sat Mar 06, 2004 10:20 am

This morning's men's qualifying round was a disaster for the US
team as both Jeff Hartwig and Toby Stevenson (as well as UCLA
senior Yoo-Suk Kim) failed to make the final. Other shocking non-
qualifers include Dmitri Markov, Alexsandr Averbukh, Okkert Brits,
Pavel Gerasimov and new German 19 footer Bjorn Otto.

Man this looks like it was a tough battle. Turns out 5.70 18'08.25"
was necessary to qualify for tomorrow afternoon's final. Igor
Pavlov was the only one to hit the auto qualifier in group A of
5.75 18'10.25". Adam Ptacek, Tim Lovinger and Denys Yurchenko all
went clear at 5.70 18'08.25" but couldn't manage 5.75 18'10.25".
They had to take those extra shots since group B had the advantage
of going after group A.

In group B it took a clutch third attempt make of 5.70 18'08.25"
by recently-struggling Romain Mesnil to secure a berth. Okkert
Brits cleared on his third as well but an earlier miss at 5.55
18'02.50" caused his to miss the final. Rens Blom and Patrik
Kristiansson qualified with relative ease, while Giuseppe Gibilisco
survived a third-attempt scare at this opening height.

So what happened to the Americans? Don't know exactly. Looks like
Jeff Hartwig struggled mightily only clearing his opening height
of 5.55 18'02.50" on his third and failing at 5.70 18'08.25".
Toby Stevenson couldn't manage his second height of 5.65 18'06.50".
Too bad for both of 'em as they looked primed for some big jumps
last weekend.

No report from the IAAF yet..

*sigh* no TV broadcast here in the States until next weekend on Fox
Sports Net. Looks like we'll have to make do with internet radio
coverage which ain't necessarily a bad thing

BBC radio broadcast of the vault might begin at 10:30am Eastern
Time. I'm not exactly sure. They did a wonderful job last year -
the announcers were definitely true fans of the sport and there were
nearly none of those wretched human interest stories that populate
television nowadays. Plus they just loved talking track so there
were no down times...

Acutally Eurosport also has pseudo-live commentary

http://www.eurosport.com/home/pages/V3/ ... 6591.shtml

"12:53 :   BIG NAMES OUT IN MEN'S POLE VAULT: As the second semi-
final round of qualification gets underway, note that Jeff Hartwig
missed the cut, skipping 5.65 and missing thrice at 5.70m. Alexandr
Averbukh with a leap of 5.65m lies in a precarious joint seventh...
The only one to advance outright to the final is Russia's Igor
Pavlov.

14:42 :   CONFIRMATION: Averbukh, but also Dmitri Markhov fail to
make the cut, however France's Romain Mesnil clears 5.70m to go
through, so does indoor world champion Tim Lobinger..."

Well if the BBC and Eurosport cooperate I'll try and send out
commentary from the event later this morning during the women's
final

Stay tuned!
