Starting Early: Sandhills Track Club Instills Love of Sport
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer
In a far corner of John Williams Stadium, Lisa Person Williams was working with rising eighth-grader Fabian Wilkerson on the shot put.
Diagonally across from them on the visitor’s side of the complex, 8-year-old Rashad Woodard was sprinting down a long jump runway under the tutelage of Nat Carter.
Scenes like this have been replayed in June and July by members of the Sandhills Track Club since Carter founded the organization in 1972.
Williams, one of the early members, went on to set a Patriot record in the shot put (since broken) and was a member of the 1979 girls’ squad that won the state championship with just six athletes. Now her 9-year-old son Benjamin and his twin sister, Janeu, are a part of the program.
