ay 12th, 2007 by Lee Nichols
I’m back, but only for a while, to watch Shade Weygandt of Mansfield in the vault. I was at dinner, so I’m not sure if she has even started yet. The bar is now at 11-9. When this event is over, I’ll probably have to go back off again. There is no power strip where I’m watching the meet, so if I’m going to make it all the way to the end of the 5A running program, I’ll have to power down recharge my batteries.

Bar is now at 12 feet. I believe there are only three girls left. Two have misses; Weygandt clears easily. Now the other two are out. Weygandt has won; now how high? She decides on 12-6. Makes it just as easily. Now she sets her sights on Jessica Trujillo’s class 5A meet record of 12-10, setting the bar at 12-11. I’m guessing after this she’ll be looking at Britany Parker’s overall state meet record of 13-3.

Oops, her first miss, at 12-11. Now she’s over, with a good six inches to spare. And yes, I was right: Now she’s going for 13-4 1/2. This could be harder; only two inches below her PR. She is the defending state champion. I’m not sure why she asked for the extra half-inch.

Wow, no problem â€â€

Well I went to my 5th track meet in 5 days already and I got done and left. It's actually 60 and sunny, but I am thinking about taking a nap.

13-10: Her first attempt goes under the bar. And now another miss, this time coming down on top of the bar.

Back to Weygandt at 13-10, final attempt. She starts down the runway but balks. Now she tries again, and misses. Final result: Shayne Wegandt with a new state of Texas record, 13-7.

Just a bad day, he has jumped 16' or better every meet since March 22 but it just wasn't his day.
