Grant district to help fields
Upgrades are planned for Rio Linda, Highlands and Grant football facilities.

Three football fields in the Grant Joint Union High School District will receive $4.9 million in face lifts this summer.
Rio Linda, Grant and Highlands are slated for improvements, including new synthetic turf fields at the latter two, said Larry Branum, senior director of facilities operations for the district.

Work crews are schedule to install new bleachers at Rio Linda, winner of the 2004 Division III section title, that will hike the field's capacity from 800 to 1,700 on the home side.
The $1.2 million project may be delayed until next season because it may take longer to get the bleachers from the manufacturer, Branum said.

Grant's facilities will receive the most renovations, with the installation of a new synthetic turf and all-weather track set for this summer. A pole vault pit and discus circle are also planned.

"We have had a terrific football program and felt this was a long time coming," Grant coach Mike Alberghini said. "Hopefully, we will break it in right by playing well."

The Pacers' field house, an adobe structure circa the 1930s, was torn down to make room for another field house with new locker rooms. The project, which will also include a concession stand, restrooms and ticket booth, is scheduled to be completed in 2006.

"It's great, especially for Grant, who is the flagship of the district," Branum said. "It has turned out some great teams and players."

Highlands, along with Grant, will make the move from natural grass to synthetic turf. Branum said Highlands' renovations were essential since the field has taken a beating through the years as the home site for both Highlands and Foothill from 1964 to 2003.

"It's been a long time coming," Highlands coach David Castillo said. "The field has been abused and used by a lot of people for many years. I think it's important because Foothill has their new stadium and it gives our players a sense of pride."

Foothill moved into its new $8 million stadium in October, ending a 40-year wait for a stadium on campus by veteran coach Frank Negri.

"We have been successful in keeping the coaches around by dangling these new facilities in front of them," Branum said.

Alberghini has been the coach at Grant since 1991, Mike Morris has been at Rio Linda since 1991, and Castillo has coached two seasons at Highlands.

Inderkum honors - Inderkum High announced the school's first Athletes of the Year, with Jeff Carter and Ericka Keylon taking the honors for the freshman class and Sarah Perona and Russell Merritt for the sophomore class.

Keylon and Carter had successful varsity cross country outings as freshmen, with Keylon finishing as the Division V girls champion in cross country and placing 16th out of 150 runners at the state meet. Keylon also played junior varsity basketball and competed in varsity track and field. Carter was on the JV soccer and varsity track and field teams.

Perona was a member of the varsity tennis and JV basketball teams. Merritt was on the varsity track and field team and the JV football and basketball teams.
