West Valley's Gaul clears 15-foot mark in pole vault

West Valley High School junior Florian Gaul cleared 15 feet in the pole vault Wednesday at a Northern Athletic League meet in Shasta Lake.

That ties the third-highest vault in Northern Section history, set by Anderson's Howie Dooley in 1987. West Valley's Tyler Gray owns the section record vault of 15 feet, six inches set in 2000. Gray's leap broke Yreka's Jeremy Moore's 1989 record of 15-1½.

Eagles senior Ethan Ostrom -- who owns the 10th-best vault in section history -- went 12 feet for second place.
