BELLINGHAM — Whatcom County, long the home of numerous outstanding high school distance runners, turns out to have several shockingly fast young sprinters.

At least, they all acknowledged they shocked themselves with their rapid improvement in the second annual Birger Solberg Team Invitational on Saturday at Civic Stadium.

Everyone expected a great girls’ 1,600-meter race between Sehome sophomore Annie Moore and Squalicum junior Sophie Curl, and they didn’t disappoint. Moore, who returned two days earlier from a week-long family vacation to Panama, nipped Curl 5:06.03 to 5:06.60 in a matchup of potential state champions.

“For my money, that was the race of the meet,â€

Lake Stevens sprinters dressed for success

Herald staff

LAKE STEVENS -- It would appear -- at least for the Lake Stevens boys track team -- that the clothes do in fact make the man.

Jeff Page, the Vikings' head track coach, had been looking for one-piece purple and yellow speed suits for several years with little success.

He finally found a company that would custom-make the suits in Lake Stevens colors and his athletes debuted them Saturday with remarkable results.

Lake Stevens athletes won seven events and placed second in five others to win the boys team title at the Viking Classic for the third year in a row with 146 points -- downing second-place Arlington by more than 60 points.

"We had a pretty good day," Page said. "We had a lot of PRs (personal records) and the kids competed real well."

Page was particularly pleased with Vikings' 400-meter relay squad of Isaac Molstre, Dustin Adams, James Little and Tyler Reside.

"They ran as fast today as I thought they would run at the end of the year," Page said. "We got those new speed suits and they ran speedy."

The team recorded a time of 43.72 seconds, which puts it among the top-10 times recorded this season, according to www.athletic.net, a high school track website.

Lake Stevens received two victories from Brennan Frost: 21 feet, 9 inches in the long jump and 6-3 in the high jump. The Vikings also received victories from Colton Tupen in the 110 hurdles (15.56), Molstre in the 200 (22.77), Kyle VanSanten in the 3,200 (9:35.35) and Kelly Kurisu in the shot put (50-4).

Edmonds-Woodway's Antoinne Wafer won the 400 (50.64) and teamed with Matt Pirie, Yonathan Yilma and Calvin Grover to win the 1,600 relay.

Shorecrest's Roy McElmurry won the pole vault (14-0) and teammate Marek Domanski won the discus (162-7).

Arlington's Marcus Dolan won the 100 (11.21) and teammate Bryan Mack won the triple jump (46-10.5). Mack was named "Athlete of the Meet" after finishing third in the 100 and second in both the long jump and the 400 relay.

CV's Cobbs follows father

Mike Vlahovich
Staff writer
April 15, 2008

Like father, like son.

When Central Valley junior Evander Cobbs was named the outstanding boys athlete during last weekend's 45th Jack Mooberry track meet he was simply following in the footsteps of his dad.

Harvey Cobbs, a three-sport athlete at Ferris, won the award as a sprinter in 1987 at the Rogers' meet.

Evander earned his award as part of the Bears' two-member winning long- and triple-jump relays and on the placing sprint medley relay.

In the triple jump, Cobbs bounded 45 feet, 11 ½ inches, one of the top four jumps in state prior to last weekend. He was joined by William Davis, who reached 44- ¼.

Central Valley's boys were meet winners with 95 points, beating Mead (85), and North Central (73).

Last year, said one of the meet organizers, Lori Shauvin, Nikki Codd of Mead was the outstanding girls performer. An uncle, Bill Codd, was the 1967 winner.

"For the 50th," said Shauvin, "we want to get the old athletes of the meet and record holders along with Tracy Walters and Gerry Lindgren."

Records in the Lindgren Mile were set by both Jayson Taylor of CV at 4:25.5 in the boys and Mead freshman Baylee Mires at 5:07.9 in the girls, placing her among the state's top four.

Other records included the Chewelah triple jump team of Liz Cobb (34-8) and Rebecca Johnstone (36-0) for a 70-8 total. Ferris' Katie Davis jumped 36-5 ¾ for the individual mark. Mt. Spokane's throwers' relay ran 46.98 for the other record.

In the girls meet, Ferris beat Mead 92-86 and Kelly McNamee was outstanding female athlete. She high jumped 5-6 as part of the winning team and won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.5. In the preliminaries, McNamee timed 15.3, the second-fastest state time.

There were several other outstanding marks, including a state-best 57.69 400 by Lewis and Clark sprinter Eleanor Siler. In addition, the Panthers (Andrea Silver, Jazmine Redmon, Alexa Banaugh and Amanda Dahlstrom) ran 49.91 in the 400 and 1:44.65 in the 800 relays, placing them among the state's top three.

Silver also shared the pole vault lead at 11-feet with East Valley's Morgan Dunning.

Shadle Park (4:01.84), Gonzaga Prep (4:04.39) and Mt. Spokane (4:10.6) had 1,600 relay times putting them among the top four in the state.

Wildcats discus thrower Rachel Damiano reached 144-6, tops in the state, and Lindsey Snyder threw 131-4 in the javelin, second in the state.

TigerCards win in Colfax
The Prescott-Waitsburg boys and girls are victorious at the 1B/2B track meet.

COLFAX -- Prescott-Waitsburg's girls picked up their first track victory of the season, and the TigerCard boys continued their winning ways at a Class 1B/2B mixed meet here Wednesday.

DeSales, Garfield-Palouse, Lacrosse-Washtucna, Walla Walla Valley Academy and St. John-Endicott joined Prescott-Waitsburg at the meet.

"Our boys and girls had a great day again," P-W coach Ron Huntington said. "We're getting enough numbers (on the team) now, our girls are really getting things going.

"Our boys, we just have so much quality and quantity that other schools can't compete. I'd rather have it a little tighter (competition) to give the boys more drive.

"Track and field, even at the Class B level, is a numbers game," Huntington said. "You need kids in every event."

Standouts for the TigerCards included freshman pole vaulter T.J. Hofer, who won the event with a jump of 10 feet, James Lehr with a victory at 131-3 in the discus, and Morgan Baker continuing his strong performances with victories in the 110 high hurdles in 15.9 and the 300 intermediates in 41.4.

Genesis Pearson won the girls discus with a toss of 89-7.
"That's a pretty big throw for a freshman girl," Huntington said. "In Class B, it's probably top 10."

DeSales finished a distant second in the girls team scoring and third on the boys side. Beth Notturno won the pole vault at 8-6 and ran a leg on the Irish's victorious 800 relay. Roxana Acock won the javelin for the Irish at 90-9 and was also a member of the 800 relay squad along with Kayla Williams and Amanda Arceo.

Lane Pearson and Cory Gall had the best efforts for the Irish boys with second-place finishes in the discus and the shot put, respectively.

But DeSales coach Mike Michels was extremely proud of his athletes in light of the tragic accident that took the life of senior pole vaulter Ryan Moberg during a practice session over spring break.

"We are emotionally drained right now," Michels said. "But the kids showed some strength of heart and character. I know that Ryan was looking down and smiling because we were out there competing."

Wa-Hi girls defend at blustery Carnival
Inclement weather can't stop Shanie Bushman and the Blue Devils at the annual Carnival of Speed.

By Roy Elia of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin

MILTON-FREEWATER — Wa-Hi’s Shanie Bushman shattered a school record in the pole vault here Friday afternoon and the Blue Devil girls claimed five individual titles overall while successfully defending their team championship during the annual Carnival of Speed track and field meet at blustery Shockman Field.

U-B photo by DARREN ELLIS Mac-Hi freshman John Lonai takes to the air during the triple jump during Friday’s Carnival of Speed. Lonai placed 19th in the event with a total of 30 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
The Blue Devil boys, who also entered the meet as defending champions, finished second behind The Dalles/Wahtonka.

Bushman, who tied the school record in the pole vault at last year’s Carnival with an effort of 10 feet, overcame inclement weather conditions — including wind gusts that exceeded 20 miles per hour — by putting forth a mark of 11 feet, six inches. She also won the triple jump (33-4.50) and placed second in the long jump (14-9.50).

“She put on a clinic in the pole vault with a state-leading 11-6, a new meet record, and (it) ties here all-time best,â€
