Stolworthy, Cards sprint past Stags

Medical Lake’s Kolette Lowe gets ready to uncork a javelin toss in last Thursday’s home track and field meet.
By NEIL PIERSON
Staff Reporter

The Medical Lake boys track and field squad opened Great Northern League dual meet action last Thursday with a split against visiting Deer Park and Pullman.

The Cardinals had few problems handling the Stags in a 94-41 victory, but fell to the powerhouse Greyhounds in a 93-52 decision. ML was especially strong in the sprinting and jumping events.

Daryl Stolworthy garnered three first-place marks at the dual, winning the 200-meter dash (23.07 seconds), 400-meter dash (53.06) and long jump (19 feet, 8 1/2 inches). Ty Souders was second in both the 100 meters (11.32) and 400 meters (53.66).

David Jacob was victorious in the 800 (2 minutes, 4.54 seconds) and the mile run (4:45.8), outlasting Pullman’s Ken Dragoo in both races. Josh Thompson cleared six feet again in the high jump, beating Pullman’s Lance Keithley by two inches.

The 1,600-meter relay team of Souders, Stolworthy, Jacob and Jeff Caudle also picked up first-place points, winning in 3:35.95. That was largely due to Stolworthy’s anchor leg, in which the senior trailed by 50 meters but turned in a 50-second lap to win by four strides.

Joe Hinson recorded a second-place mark in the shot put (37-11 1/4). Third-place efforts came from Jordan Mueller in the 110 high hurdles (17.26), Joe Davison in the discus (109-3) and Thompson in the javelin (131-9).

Medical Lake’s girls dropped both ends of the dual meet, falling 94-52 to Deer Park and 124-25 to Pullman.
Ally Ganyo and Marissa Propeck turned in the team’s two first-place marks. Ganyo blazed to victory in the 800 (2:25.6), while Propeck turned in a season-best time of 1:03.48 to win the 400.

Second-place marks came from Propeck in the high jump (4-10) and Kolette Lowe in the pole vault (6-6). The 800-meter relay foursome of Propeck, Ganyo, Kelly Alderman and Ashlee Davis was also second (1:58.21).

Third-place marks included Alderman’s 14-foot, 3-inch leap in the long jump and Marleen Von Der Heiden clearing 6 feet in the pole vault.

The squads split up on Saturday, with several athletes going to the Mooberry Relays at Gonzaga Prep and the rest staying home for the Lind-Ritzville-hosted Undeberg Invite.
ML was competing for the first time at the Mooberry event, unique because it pairs up team members for most events. The boys finished 14th in their 15-team field and the girls were 15th out of 17 squads.

In the open running events, Jacob took the one-mile crown in 4:32.2, beating the second-place runner from North Central by five seconds. Stolworthy was second in the 400 (50.2) and Souders was fourth in the 400 (50.8).

In the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay, the boys’ team of Souders, Stolworthy, Jacob and Jarrod Swanson finished fourth (3:45.5). The girls’ foursome of Ganyo, Propeck, Sierra Kent and Randi Ruggles took second (4:29.0).

Thompson broke the school record in the high jump by clearing 6-5 1/4, but because of the team-oriented format, didn’t place when Swanson failed to make the opening height.

At the Undeberg Invite, Sam Daly was fourth in the two-mile (11:09.87) and eighth in the one-mile (5:03.72). Mueller was fifth in the 110 hurdles (18.36) and Nathan Jones was seventh in the 400 (1:00.23). None of the girls were in the top-eight of their respective events.

The teams returned to GNL action on Thursday, traveling to Cheney to face the host Blackhawks and Riverside. On Saturday, they’ll be at the 18-team Quincy Invitational.

Track and field season heats up

Medical Lake’s Jessica Klesh pushes forward during the girls 4,000-meter medley relay on Saturday.
By NEIL PIERSON
Staff Reporter

In a busy weekend for the Medical Lake track and field teams, a little slice of history was rewritten.

Senior distance runner Ally Ganyo set a new school record in the girls 800-meter race, traversing the two laps at Saturday’s Pasco Invitational in 2 minutes, 23.7 seconds. The mark was good for 13th place and broke the old school mark of 2:24.1.

Cardinal coach Phil Tennison said Ganyo had to battle back after the 40-runner field had her boxed into the edge of the track. She ended up being only nine-tenths of a second short of eighth place and a spot on the medal stand.

“She had to get out of that after the first lap and then take off,â€Â

Kuula leads Cheney boys to eighth place at Freeman Invitational

Cheney’s Korey Adams gets ready to pass the baton to DeAngelo Jones during Saturday’s boys 400-meter relay event at Central Valley High School.
By MIKE HUFFMAN
Staff Reporter

While there was plenty of competition -- and a little rain -- there were some bright spots for the Cheney girls and boys track teams at last Saturday’s Freeman Invitational.

As a team, the Cheney boys finished eighth in Freeman with 37 points. Top point-getter Timberlake ran away with the win with 112, with Lakeland a distant second with 72.
The Cheney girls had to settle for the middle of the pack as a team at 13 with 18 points. Winning the day was Mead with 81.5.

Junior Isaac Kuula took the highest individual score for the Blackhawks, running the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 4.49 seconds to take second place. Tyler Schmidt took seventh place with 2:10.32.

In the 400 meters, DeAngelo Jones finished seventh with 55.75.

While it was somewhat of a surprise that Jesus Fregoso didn’t make a top-eight appearance in the 100-meter dash -- one of Cheney’s stronger events -- coaches had to be happy with sophomore Daniel Issa’s fifth-place finish in the 3,200 with his time of 10:36.23.

Cheney also finished seventh in the 1,600 relay, with Great Northern League rival West Valley finishing third with 3:43.50.

Cheney’s distance medley relay team also had a good day in Freeman, finishing second at 11:28.41 -- good enough to beat GNL competitors Colville, Medical Lake and West Valley, who finished third, seventh and eighth, respectively.

In the field events, sophomore Jeff Rodgers finished fourth in the discus at 120 feet, 2 inches.

For the girls, their distance medley relay team also did well, placing third at 14:39.88 -- well ahead of Medical Lake’s 16:19.44 eighth placing.

Cheney finished eighth in the 800-meter relay at 2:00.18. The Blackhawks did better in the 1,600 relay, finishing sixth and outdistancing eighth-place East Valley, which got a time of 4:51.95.
In the field, Bryanna Pavish also outperformed three EV competitors, taking fifth place at 94-1.

The Cheney track teams host Colville and Clarkston today (Thursday) at 3:30 p.m. and then travel to Rogers High School in Spokane for the Mooberry Invitational starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

TRACK

Hauck raises the bar

KIRKLAND ---- Mark Morris senior Carrie Hauck pole vaulted 11 feet, 3 inches here on Saturday to shatter her own school record and finish second overall at the Lake Washington Invitational.

"It's one of the largest girls' track meets in the state and there were 35 girl vaulters," MM coach Bill Baker said.

Hauck established the previous MM record of 11 feet last year at state and matched the height earlier this season.

"She had another great attempt at 11-6 but just barely pulled the bar down," Baker added.

DeLapp leads Ducks

RIDGEFIELD ---- Toutle Lake's Jeran DeLapp was named outstanding male athlete, while Woodland won the boys' side and finished second in the girls' standings at the Lewis River Invitational track and field meet here Saturday.

The Beavers tallied 106.5 team points while the Toutle Lake boys tied with Vancouver Christian for second place (73 points apiece).

Perez paces Fishermen

SHELTON ---- Three groups placed for Ilwaco here Saturday at the Shelton Invitational track and field meet.

Ilwaco's Bonnie Perez placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 111-4. She also teamed up with Cameo Ulbricht, Annikka Wolters and Kelly Freese as Ilwaco took fifth in the distance medley relay (13:58.19).
