‘Donate Life Month’ Takes on New Meaning with Jerry Cahill Lung Transplant
04/23/2012
April 23, 2012

Jerry texted Foundation staff over the weekend to confirm that his surgery went well and that he is on the road to recovery. He also said that he expected to be moved out of the ICU today.

Please continue to keep Jerry in your thoughts and prayers. If you wish to send a card or note of encouragement to Jerry, you may mail it to the BEF offices, and we will make sure he receives it:

April 18, 2012

April is "National Donate Life Month," a celebration which took on new meaning today when the Boomer Esiason Foundation's Jerry Cahill underwent a double-lung transplant.

Jerry, 55 and living with cystic fibrosis, is a volunteer who manages BEF's scholarship and transplant grants programs. He also founded the Team Boomer - Fighting Cystic Fibrosis athletic program, hosts a regular CF podcast and produces the CF Wind Sprint video series. In addition, Jerry last fall launched the You Cannot Fail: You Are the Hero of Your Own Story campaign.

Jerry's surgeons earlier today reported that the transplant procedure was a success and that Jerry has been transferred to the intensive care unit at Columbia University Medical Center.

Please join with us in sending thoughts and prayers to Jerry, his family, his medical team and the donor's family during the critical post-op time period. For updates on Jerry's recovery, please visit the BEF Facebook page.

We also invite you to visit Jerry's page in the CF Stories section of our website, where you can view his You Cannot Fail video and read through his complete biography.

Vaulting Inspiration
by Tim Fulton — posted on 4/24/2012
Jerry Cahill — the pole vault coach at Iona Prep and Ursuline School in New Rochelle, N.Y. — is an inspiration to everyone who meets him. That includes many in the track and field community who don't even know that Cahill has Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects more than 30,000 people in the United States.
April is 'National Donate Life Month,' which took on new meaning for Cahill last Wednesday when he received a call he has been waiting for a number of years. The double lung transplant was approved and performed. He received his new lungs that day thanks to a very generous donor.
There are plenty of challenges ahead for Jerry, including the threat of infections and the rejection of the lungs. Yet challenges are what Jerry is about. He volunteers with the Boomer Esiason Foundation, heading up scholarship and transplant grants programs. He also founded the Team Boomer - Fighting Cystic Fibrosis athletic program, hosts a regular CF podcast and produces the CF Wind Sprint video series. In addition, Jerry last fall launched the You Cannot Fail: You Are the Hero of Your Own Story campaign.
One of Cahill's message to others with CF is that keeping your body as strong as possible through exercize will have a vast impact both health and qualify of life. Jerry practices what he preaches as he still competes in pole vault competitions and road races in addition to gym workouts to rival anyone you've met.
Jerry continues to make improvements with each passing day at Columbia University New York Presbyterian — right across the street from The Armory. His lungs are functionally normally and the hospital staff has him up and walking.
Coach Jan Mitchell — who works with Cahill on a daily basis — could not say enough positive things about his friend. "Jerry is a true inspiration to everyone who is lucky enough to know him. He values life more than anyone I have ever met. He is the most positive person ever! We are fortunate to have him as our pole vault coach at Iona Prep and Ursuline since 1988. The National CF Community is very lucky to have such a man proving that you can live a long and productive life with this disease."
Please keep the donor family, his medical staff and Jerry in your prayers for a speedy recovery.

Jerry is doing great, from what I have seen on Facebook. Looks like his body is doing awesome with the new lungs, no signs of rejection. Looks like they survived Sandy without much damage.
