72-Year Old To Pole Vault At Livonia Spree

Roberta Jasina Reporting

Southfield (WWJ) -- Call him a 72 year old Superman.

Look. Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane.

Nope. It's 72 year old Jim Roth of Hartland, Michigan who is competing in the Livonia Spree Pole Vault Competition Saturday at Ford Field (Farmington Rd. at Lyndon) starting at 10 am.

The competition is for people ages 12 and up.

Again, Roth is 72. He's been coaching for the past several years.

"It's a catapault, it's a slingshot skyward and that's why it's so damn much fun," Roth told WWJ's Roberta Jasina

Roth says the secret to successful pole vaulting is being fast and flexible. (Being fearless doesn't hurt, either.)

Listen to Roberta's entire interview with Jim Roth.
