Hi everyone!
I'm a pole vaulter from Australia. I'm studying at university and I'm looking at going on exchange to a college in the USA (my uni has exchange agreements with quite a few). This wold be for a semester next year. My question is, if I go to a school that has PV, would I be able to train or compete while I am there? Or do you have to be a permanent student there for that?

I'm not sure of the rules, but if you are elidgable I don't see why there would be any problem with you competing for the university. Keep in mind you want to go in the spring semester if you want to compete. Even if you can't compete for the team, you could probably jump unattached and train on the teams facilities. Most coaches are cool about that kind of thing. I would contact the schools head coaches where you are considering and ask them. There emails, are probably on the schools athletic site. So the spring semester is the first half of the year, right? When does the collegiate competitve season generally start and finish?

think opposite... for northern hemisphere fall starts in september, winter in december, spring in march, and summer in june. you would want to check with your school, but if they are on a semester system the fall semester usually starts around the end of august, and i think the "spring" semester would probably start in january(even though january is technically winter, i guess this is because the semester ends in spring).

the collegiate track season generally runs from January through May or June with indoors taking up january, february, and part of march and outdoors taking up part of march, april, may, and maybe a bit of june

Edit: okay, i just read your message again and i think i was thinking of year as academic year(august-may). you probably meant calander year, in which case you are correct(how is the winter weather down under by the way?)

For a definitive answer, you need to contact the athletic department of the schools you are interested in.
