For the first time in school history, Cuesta College won both the men's and women's state championships in the pole vault Saturday at Bakersfield College.

Cuesta sophomore Kasey Burlingham won the men's event with a mark of 16 feet, 9 inches. He tried for what would have been a school and state record of 17-4 but came up short in a howling wind. It marked the first time since 1994 that Cuesta won a men's state title.

Cuesta freshman Kate Almond won with the women's event with a mark of 12-1, edging second-place teammate Christine Silva based on misses. It marked the first time since 2004 that Cuesta won a women's state title.

"We're pretty excited," Cuesta head coach Jani Johnson said. "That's the best that Cuesta has ever done, having men's and women's champions in both events." <article continues>

WAY to Go Jani

NOt sure all knows that JAni Johnson is JAn johnson's wife and Chelsea who just jumped 15+ Jani is her MOM. SO there is great coaching for that college. JAni knows the vault just as JAN and has done a great job congrats to JANI and her vaulters.
The family that vaults together stays together

This is an interesting concept, a "state" championship for colleges.
How is it organized?

this was the community college state chamionships....

i may be wrong here, but CA has a state championship because they are not included on the NAtional Jr. College stuff because of the states size... I think i heard that Texas was the same way...

anyone else know?

and props to Cuesta, one of the top Comm. college vault programs in the nation...

There is no true national JC scene. CA does their own thing, the NW does their own thing, etc.

The NW Conference records are:
17' 1/4" for men, Bill Jones, Clackamas Community College
14'4" for women, Becky Holliday, Clackamas Community College (National Record also)
