While sprints were being taken care of on the track, the Orange and Blue field competitors dominated the field events, winning three of six events and placing second in another. Senior Eric Disilvestro stunned everyone in attendance as he set a new personal best of 17'01.00" (5.21m), one foot higher than any other competitor.

On one attempt to vault after already breaking his personal best, DiSilvestro spiked the pole with his left foot as he began his vault, snapping the pole in half and sending him falling to the mat. He was left unscarred, however seemed rattled which caused him to fail his next two attempts to continue to top his record. DiSilvestro's mark of 17'01.00" provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Championships.

"Qualifying is nice," DiSilvestro said. "I've been intending to do it all year, so it's just another step for me on the way to nationals."

Following DiSilvestro in the pole vault in second place was sophomore John Adamczyk with a vault of 16'00.75".

Lobo Vaulters Keep Flying At Home In New Mexico Invitational

Next home meet, the Albuquerque Invitational, set for Feb. 11 at the Convention Center.

Whitney Johnson surpassed the NCAA provisional standard with a winning mark of 12-11.50 in the pole vault.

Jan. 28, 2006

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico pole vaulters continued to thrive in the friendly confines of the Albuquerque Convention Center as Derek Mackel and Whitney Johnson combined for a UNM sweep of the men's and women's events today in the New Mexico Invitational. Mackel surpassed the NCAA provisional standard for the second straight week with a mark of 17-07.25 and Johnson had a provisional qualifying vault of 12-11.50 to lead a strong effort by the Lobos in a 13-team field that included the No. 15 Texas Tech men.

Both Mackel and Johnson bowed out after narrowly missing all three attempts at the UNM indoor records in their respective events. Coming off a career-best 17-11.00 clearance last week, Mackel ended his day after a valiant run at Simon Arkell's 1991 record of 18-01.50. Johnson, meanwhile, missed on all three attempts to surpass Bridgid Isworth's 2003 mark of 13-02.50. Mackel led a 1-2-3 finish for the Lobos in the men's vault as junior Robert Caldwell cleared 16-08.75 and sophomore Zach Graham recorded a collegiate best mark of 16-02.75.

Luethmers Set UW Record in Pole Vault

MADISON, Wis. - For the second time in as many meets, the University of Wisconsin school record in the pole vault has been set. Redshirt sophomore Blair Luethmers broke the record set two weeks ago by freshman Jenny Soceka at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational on Saturday in the Shell.

Luethmers, from Park Falls, Wis., improved her personal best three times in a row at the meet, including a final clearance of 13 feet, ¼ inch. Her mark shattered Soceka’s mark of 12-6 ¼ set at the Badger Track Classic two weeks ago. Luethmers mark is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Soceka finished second in the vault today at 12-0 ½.

Luethmers was the only NCAA qualifier at the meet but the Badgers won nine other events.
