MPV - NCAA West Region Results

Unread postby achtungpv » Sat May 26, 2012 5:36 pm

First, the big news...NCAA leader and U20 national record holder Andrew Irwin didn't qualify. His jumps, quite honestly, looked sloppy. It looked like he was trying just enough to qualify and wasn't finishing his jumps. When he unexpectedly missed twice at 5.35, he then had to finish a vault but had the standards too far back and fell on the bar. You could probably chalk it up to being a freshman. They're all knuckleheads.

Whitt appears to be back. He looks to be the fastest he's ever been on the runway. He is in 5.70 shape right now.

Cunningham, Juilfs, and Woepse have some technical issues to clean up and they'll be over 5.60 without much effort.

Those 4 were really quite a bit ahead of the rest of the qualifiers.

I'm still amazed at how many guys can line up and clear a 5.50 bungee clean but put a bar at 5.25 and they freak out and forget how to vault. I could name a half dozen from today but I won't.

I'm still amazed at how many guys can line up and clear a 5.50 bungee clean but put a bar at 5.25 and they freak out and forget how to vault. I could name a half dozen from today but I won't.

There are a bunch of jumpers out there that can do it when there is no pressure but turn up the heat a little and its amazing what happens. You see it at every level. I like the guys that look like crap in warm up but smoke it during the meet.

I'm sad that Andrew didn't make it through. He had an off day and didn't make the bars he needed so he could keep playing the game. I don't know if you've ever met Andrew, Achtungpv, or spent time with him while he's training, but I can assure you that he was giving it all he had. I hate it for him and his team.

Good luck to the 24 that did make it through!

It's not the end of the world for Irwin, he should have many good college years ahead of him, and in the immediate future, he is one of only 4 guys with the A standard, and only 3 of them will make the team, so unless a bunch of guys whip out a 5.72 in the next few weeks, he has a VERY good shot at making the Olympic team.

Obviously the PV is not like the deca or 10k, and it's generally not a big deal to compete often, but now he and his coach can 100% focus on getting ready for the Olympic Trials and the hopefully the Olympics. If nothing else, it can be emotionally draining to have so many big meets so close together.

*positive spin* :)
