Colorado-Colorado Springs sophomore Lauren Graham cleared a school-record 4.13 meters to place second in the pole vault at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships on Friday in Albuquerque.

Graham, who’s third attempt at 4.18 meters caused the bar to shudder and then eventually fall, would have been the Mountain Lions’ first ever female national champion. But her effort did set a school record.

Minnesota State’s Lauren Stelton won because she missed just once at the winning height while Graham missed twice.

MSU's Stelten wins national championship
Senior had come close before with two runner-ups

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Minnesota State senior Lauren Stelten won the national championship in the pole vault Friday at the NCAA Division II indoor track and field championships.

Stelten, a native of Cologne, Minn., cleared 13 feet, 6 1/2 inches, as did runner-up Lauren Graham of Colorado-Colorado Springs. However, Stelten edged out Graham with only one miss at her championship height. Graham had two misses there.

Stelten, now a four-time All-American, took second place as a freshman and again a year ago as a junior. She placed sixth in 2009.

Warriors' Wagner reaches rarified air at Indoors
Bee Staff Reports

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Cal State Stanislaus pole vaulters have excelled nationally over the years. That trend continue Friday with Alycia Wagner.
Wagner, a senior from Paso Robles, placed fifth at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships when she cleared a career-high 12 feet, 6¾ inches. She becomes the fifth Stanislaus woman to earn All-American status in indoor track and field and the fourth in the pole vault.
Lauren Steelton of Minnesota State won the event with a 13-6.

"Alycia jumped good, got in a rhythm, and cleared a bunch of heights," Stanislaus pole vault coach Tom Brenda said. "Placing fifth place with a career record and an All-American award is tough to beat."

Best pole vault in school history lands Graham second place at nationals

Lauren Graham placed second at nationals by recording an astounding 4.13 meter pole-vault last week.
Lauren Graham pole-vaulted a UCCS school record 4.13 meters this past weekend to finish second place at the NCAA Division-II National Track & Field Championships held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Eventual pole vault champion Lauren Shelton from Minnesota State cleared the same height as Graham but did so in fewer tries breaking the tie between the two athletes. 4.13 meters was also a personal best for Graham who was in high spirits after a successful weekend.
"It went really well, both Lauren Shelton and I had really good meets, we both had personal records and we both kept each other going, it was really exciting," said Graham.
Though a win would have made Graham the first indoor track national champion in UCCS history, her experience at nationals will only make her a better pole vaulter heading into the outdoor season where Graham is the returning RMAC champion.
"Obviously coming to the national championships and doing your personal best and jumping 4.13 meters is huge. Taking second place is a fantastic accomplishment," said UCCS assistant coach Brandon Masters.
Graham's performance at nationals was merely a capstone on one of the most impressive indoor season by any athlete in UCCS history. The 2011 indoor season saw Graham set numerous personal records, break the UCCS school record, win RMAC athlete of the week (twice), and RMAC athlete of the month for the month of February.
"I think the season progressed well. Basically the big improvements come from plant and speed down the runway, and with that you can get on bigger poles and we were able to get her [Lauren] on a 14-foot pole this year for indoors which is fantastic," said coach Masters. "We're setting our sights on jumping 14 feet plus for outdoor, and I think there's a very realistic chance she gets it this season, which is huge. There've only been a couple girls in Division II history to jump over 14 feet."
