Part of why participation is higher for the men is due to the indoor heptathlon having the pole vault.

This count does not include athletes who were redshirting, it only counts athletes who competed for their schools and achieved a mark.

I am probably missing a few heptathletes as I did not always get all those marks in.

The NAIA numbers are a tad low as athletes in California and the South are allowed to qualify for indoor nationals at outdoor meets, those outdoor meets are counted in the outdoor rankings on athletic.net.

These numbers will be much higher outdoors, as there are a significant number of schools that only have outdoor track, including both west coast junior college systems.

If my calculations are correct, that means that out of the total estimated number of vaulters that competed last year on the high school level, about an average of 3.6% will further their vaulting career in college.
