ya hes a beast watched him win state last yr, waited for the competition was down two the last guy was finishing before he started warming up....then raised the bar a foot and a half for his opening height

Is it just me or are there an unusually large number of 18'ers this year? I count 4 guys over 18' and no one lower than 17'5.5".

Not really. There are usually a handful.

In 2000 5.50 at NCAA's earned you 8th place.

And 17'5.5" is the cutoff to get in...

No, it's still weak compared to the past, it's just slightly less weak than the past few years.

according to live result updates:

Porter, Lowe, Hoste, Imlach, Roth, and Haynie have made 5.20m on their first attempts, putting them in a tie for first

Tied for seventh are Wallace and DeLeo, presumably with second attempt clearances.

O'Neill grad wins NCAA Division I indoor pole vault championship

Rory Quiller won an NCAA Division I pole vault championship last night, but it sure didn't seem like he was headed out to celebrate.

"It was kind of bittersweet," Quiller said. "A bunch of guys could have gone higher than I did. I should have gone higher, so it was kind of a flukey thing."

Regardless, the records will show Quiller, a Binghamton graduate student and James I. O'Neill graduate, cleared 18 feet, 1/2 inch to win at the University of Arkansas.

Here's the reason for the tempered enthusiasm: Quiller hoped to clear 18-81/4, which would have given him an automatic berth into the U.S. Olympic Trials.

He missed three chances at that height, after he clinched the victory.

"I would have rather finished second, third or fourth," Quiller said, "but still cleared 18-81/4."

Quiller recently won the IC4A championship, clearing 18-61/2 and was seeded first at that height heading into the national championship.

"The top guys didn't look as sharp as they have looked," Binghamton coach Mike Thompson said. "He didn't clear (18-1/2) until his third attempt."

Quiller is the first Binghamton athlete to win an NCAA Division I national title.

He's now a three-time All-American.

Quiller also is the first America East Conference athlete to win a national championship in its 29-year history.

He finished second at this meet last year, then fourth at the outdoor championships.
