LAKE CHARLES--McNeese State's record setting pole vaulter Brad Gebauer has been named the Southland Conference's track newcomer of the year.
In his first season with the Cowboys, Gebauer set a school record, won the league's indoor title, won the NCAA indoor title and last week finished second in the SLC's championship meet.
His top vault outdoors has been an 18-0 3/4, which set a school record and ties as the fifth highest vault in conference history.
Gebauer is a native of Michigan and transferred to McNeese from Michigan State for his final year of eligibility.
Other athletes named top award winners from the SLC outdoor track season were: (Men) Athlete of the year - Kalphys Kemboi (SE Louisiana), Outstanding Field Performer - Robert Melin (Texas State), Outstanding Track Performer - Ravyn Hayward (Northwestern State), Freshman of the Year - Kalphys Kemboi (SE Louisiana), Coach of the Year - John Sauerhage (UT Arlington), High Point Scorer - Kallplhys Kemboi (SE Louisiana); (Women) Athlete of the Year - Ryanne Dupree (UTSA), Outstanding Field Performer - Ryanne Dupree (UTSA), Outstanding Track Performer - Jessica Fisher (Sam Houston State), Freshman of the Year - Jessica Fisher (Sam Houston State), Newcomer of the Year - Abby Ruston (Texas State), Coach of the Year - Galilna Bukharina (Texas State), High Point Scorer - Ryanne Dupree (UTSA).
