Area Notebook Yorkville grad Voiland sets DIII record

March 10, 2007
from staff reports
Augustana senior and Yorkville graduate Meghan Voiland broke her own school record and also established a new NCAA Division III national record when she placed second in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III national indoor track and field championships Friday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

Voiland tied Megan Rossi of North Central for the top spot as both cleared 12-feet, 11 1/2 inches to share the national record. Only one of the athletes could be declared a winner, however, and following eight additional tiebreaker jumps, Rossi finally cleared 12-3 1/2 to capture the title after Voiland narrowly clipped the bar in her attempt.

For Voiland it was her seventh All-America certificate in the pole vault in seven national meets. This was her fourth national runner-up finish after placing second in the 2005 indoor season and second in both indoors and outdoors in 2006. She also broke her own school record of 12-9 1/2, set twice during the 2006 season.

Bolingbrook's Rossi becomes national champ for second time

March 16, 2007
staff reports
For the second time in her career, North Central College senior Megan Rossi of Bolingbrook is the NCAA Division III national pole vault champion. After engaging in a dramatic jump-off with Augustana's Meghan Voiland on the first day of the championships, Rossi finally prevailed. Both competitors set a national record with marks of 12-feet-11.5-inches.

"I was just thinking of concentrating on the process," said Rossi, a Downers Grove South High School graduate. "I didn't even know the height - I didn't want to know the height. I just wanted to concentrate on the process."

After clearing 12-11.5, both Rossi (the 2004 national indoor champion) and Voiland engaged in a jump-off that went up the ladder, back down and then up again. Following eight additional jumps and two exhausted competitors, Rossi cleared 12-3.50 to capture the title after Voiland narrowly clipped the bar in her tiebreak attempt.

"It was amazing," North Central coach Kari Kluckhohn said. "It was one of the best competitions I've ever seen at any time. Megan stayed very focused throughout. She put it all together today and that's what she's been working on all year."
