Bryant's McCorkel sets Class AAAAA state-meet record
Monday, May 22, 2006 12:18 PM CDT
Bryant's Spencer McCorkel already has the record for the highest pole vault in the state's high school history. But McCorkel's vault at the AAAAA State Track Championship in Cabot early last week is by no means less signifigant than the aforementioned state title. At Cabot, among the other top vaulters in the state of Arkansas, McCorkel shattered the old record with his vault of 16 foot and 8 inches.
The old record-holder, Arkansas Vualt Clun coach Morry Sanders was on hand to watch McCorkel add another line to his impressive resume. McCorkel now owns the state indoor and outdoor pole vault record, along with being the national indoor record holder and he is only a junior.
McCorkel owns the highest vault in Arkansas high school history, 17' 3.5", which is also the national indoor record for 11th graders.
"I was very glad to see Spencer have a successful state meet." said Steve Oury, Bryants boys' track coach. "He was wanting to get into the 17 foot range, but considering that last year he didn't even get to compete after he cut his hand on a broken pole in warmups, it's nice to get the victory and the record. Next week he can try to break his own overall record at the Meet of Champs."
McCorkel's ten points netted in the vualt helped Bryant finish in fourteenth place. Forrest City took the championship.
