Looks like the Golden West Invitational is now an all-comers meet:

How sad.

Sadly, that's the way it was heading back in 2005 when I took some kids out there. It was held in Folsum that year and sponsored by Adidas. Used to be, they invited the top 8 in the country in each event and those top 8 didn't decline because it was a very prestigious meet. You had that and the Keebler International in Chicago to chose from. That was it. The folks at Golden West put a ton of effort into welcoming and accommodating the athletes and coaches, going to the extent of finding sponsors for each event. I had the opportunity to go back in 1988 and I will always remember the hospitality my coach and I were shown by their event staff!

Another old tradition gone I guess. They used to bring you in a couple of days early, took all the kids on a day trip to San Fran and had a big dinner the night before and after meet with speakers. Was a great experience for the kids in the 90s.
Winners find a way to win, losers find an excuse.
