I have had several former track athletes from our local school that were "All americans" during their 4 years in track and field at our high school. Several of these have asked if my son has reached this status yet and I am drawing a blank as far as any information about this destinction. Could anyone help me find out what it takes to recieve this prestigious award in track and field. Thanks

usually all-american status is declared by the USAT&F for competing in USAt&F Jr. Nationals and placing in the top 8, or by competing at the National Scholastic Sports Federation meet and placing in the top 5 or so. Its been a while, so I can't rememeber exactly what you had to do.

I don't think any of these athletes ever competed in usatf. I may be mistaken but I thought that one of these athletes told me that it was thru the high school, by his local coach. He cannot remember how that process evoloved. Our local coaching staff doesn't know anything about this process, so I thought someone here may possibly know. Possibly this was before usatf invlovement ??????? It has been probably 8 to 10 years since the last gentleman got his status.

My kid won AAU Junior Olympics youth div. twice and both times along with his medal they gave him a jacket patch that says "All American". Also, the National Elite Youth Ranking System awards All American status to the top 20 for the year. I don't know how the high schoolers or college guys do it, but I think there are a variety of ways.

All American is a vague term that can mean a lot of things in high school track.
Here's a good thread about it from a bit over a year ago

You get to put a USA shaped patch on your letterman's jacket....that's about it
I was a 3 time all american in HS and it got me squat
