Guys and Girls jumping together?

Unread postby scpolevaulter » Wed Apr 11, 2012 2:00 am

Are there any rules regarding guys and girls jumping together in a meet? We recently had a meet where the host team put them together and led to our 14 6 vaulter to wait 3 and a half to 4 hours after warmups just to NH.

Thanks for any help.

I believe if both head coaches agree, a combined event is possible.

We do this at our league meets when the fields are small and most of the boys aren't very good. It sounds like you had a lot of kids, I personally would not have combined them, but I don't think anything in the rules prohibits it. Talk to your head coach about it, they shouldn't be combining them if it's a 3 hour competition.

I'm fairly certain SC has rules where if you skip at least 3 heights, you get a run through without a bar before you go. Check with your coach and his rule book though; I'm from NC originally and it may be an NC rule instead.

That's a national rule. As of last year, you get two minutes instead of one run through if you have passed three heights.

In a smaller dual meet it seems ok, but for your meet to be over 3 hours it must have been a multi-team invitational. I've never seen a multi-team high school invitational run boys and girls together. I'd skip that meet in the future if I was you.

I have done this when officiating meets, but only when there were twelve or fewer total competitors, and/or when there was impending inclement weather or darkness. As long as competitors get two minutes of run-throughs after three passed heights, there is not a problem.

I also think that this gives the better girl jumpers a shot of adrenaline and helps them to do better. (Maybe it even embarrasses the underachieving boys to do better...) ;)
