Jordan Yamoah opened his senior season by breaking the New York state indoor pole vault record, clearing 16'6" Friday night Dec. 17 at the Jim Mitchell Invitational at the Armory.

Yamoah, a 17-year-old senior at Arlington (Poughkeepsie), made the height on his first attempt, matching his own outdoor PR from last spring. It broke the state indoor record by half an inch, the 16'5 1/2" by Casey DiCesare of Irvington. Yamoah, who wears glasses when he vaults and is 5'9", 145 pounds, then had three close attempts at 17'0".

"I wasn't expecting to even attempt 17 feet this early in the season," Yamoah said.

I saw jordan's record breaking jump in person, he FLEW over 16'6" on his 15'1" 165 UCS Spirit by about 6 inches or so but was inside on all his attempts at 17'

it's only december! He'll be at 17' before the end of the season, couldn't happen to a better kid

Track and field: Yamoah sets state pole vault record
MIKE BENISCHEK • POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL • DECEMBER 19, 2010

By the time Jordan Yamoah took his first vault on Friday night, the Jim Mitchell Invitational indoor track and field meet was drawing to a close.

As the athletes and crowd began to file out of the Armory, the Arlington High School senior put on a show worth staying for.

"When they saw me jump, people just kind of stopped what they were doing and watched me jump," Yamoah said on Saturday. "It was fun."

Yamoah proceeded to clear 16 feet, 6 inches, breaking the New York state record for boys indoor competition. Last spring, he cleared that same height to set the outdoor record.

"It feels pretty great," he said. "It was a little unexpected. I did feel like I could reach this record, but not so early in the season."

Yamoah had surgery in early August to repair a slight meniscus tear in his left knee sustained at the state qualifiers in the spring. After three months of rehabilitation, he was back practicing in November and said, "I got most of the flexibility back. I can jump fine with it."

Still, Arlington coach Steve Arnett said he tried to keep Yamoah's expectations low for Friday's meet.

"My approach right now is just go out, have some fun," Arnett said. "Maybe I'll tell him to have fun the whole year."

Yamoah's indoor mark surpassed the previous record, held by Irvington's Casey DiCesare, by half an inch.

After clearing 16-6, Yamoah made three attempts at 17 feet, narrowly missing on his last attempt.

"I want to go for 18-plus this year," he said. "I'm all better now. My knee is fixed. Every height I cleared (Friday) night was all on one attempt."

Teammate Stefan Buchele finished fifth in the pole vault at 11-6.

I better check the batteries in my laser device. May need it come March at the NYS meet and again at the NB meet. This young man lives only thirty miles from me, but since the Hudson river is between our locations, I rarely get to see him jump as he competes in a different sectional area.

Track and field: Arlington's Yamoah breaks own mark to lead locals at Kickoff meet

MIKE BENISCHEK • POUGHKEEPSIE JOURNAL • DECEMBER 20, 2010

The legend of Jordan Yamoah reached new heights on Sunday. Literally.

The Arlington High School senior, who as of Friday night owns both the New York State indoor and outdoor pole-vaulting records, became the first athlete in state history to clear 17 feet. He did it at the Section 1 Kickoff No. 2 at the Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan.

"Oh my God. I almost fell out of the stands," Arlington coach Steve Arnett said of the accomplishment. "You think I'm joking. They grabbed me. I was kind of jumping up and down."

On Saturday, Yamoah said his goal for the season was to clear more than 18 feet.

"If he does 18 feet, it would probably kill me," Arnett said jokingly. "I'm stunned at what he's done. I guess anything's possible in the book of Yamoah."
